Day 6 Friday 12th April
Last day in Lisbon but we’ll be back for a few days at the end of our trip. Time to take it easy after that uphill walking yesterday. My legs still ache.
After breakfast, Liz takes some clothes down to the laundromat while I hang around the room reading Suzi Ronson’s book about her time with David Bowie. She was Mick Ronson’s wife. After the washing is done we head off to a place called the Village Underground. A walk through the city near the water then a tram ride to LX Factory. When we get off the tram we are facing the BMAD Museum which is an Art Deco museum and looks kind of interesting so we book a tour in English for later on. Village Underground is next to LX Factory and is a mixture of containers and old double-decker buses piled on top of each other. The place is empty except for people having meetings or working. It goes off at about 11 pm by the signs on the wall. Still, it’s interesting to look around and very Mad Max.
Walk back to LX and have lunch. All the food here is great and this one came with a free beer!
We make our way to BMAD and we are a little early so the manager gives us a free glass of wine. The place is sponsored by a wine company so the wine flows. Our guided tour turns out to be just Liz and I and our tour guide is a delight. The Museum is full of Art Deco and because I’m currently watching Babylon Berlin I kind of get the vibe. Especially with Josephine Baker's music playing in the background. 1920s/1930s. Many pieces I wish I had. Very inspiring.
And at the end of the tour, we have a wine tasting. Perfect. And only 6 Euros which is about the cost of a glass of wine anyway.
Speaking of prices we catch a BOLT back to the hotel and the cost is 5 Euros for a 20-minute ride. Ubers and BOLTs are so cheap here they must be making a pittance. I give the driver a 5 Euro tip.
Liz goes upstairs to rest but I want to check out a record shop I have heard about. Sound Club Store. On the way there I pop in Louie Louie and browse the second-hand records.
Sound Club Store however is closed when I get there. No sign on the door. Other people are outside waiting to get in but the shopkeeper next door doesn’t know why the owner is not there. Bummer. Maybe when we get back in a few weeks.
Back at the hotel and get ready to go and eat. Decided to return to Bar Josephine wear we ate lunch a few days ago. The lamb meatballs were terrific. Google Maps takes us through this narrow street which is almost like visiting India. The food smells are brilliant but Liz finds the lack of, as in no females at all quite scary so she is happy when gets to the restaurant.
Order our tapas and sit outside. Bad move because a chilly wind has come up and then they forget to bring out the meatballs. Another bummer. Still, it’s a lovely walk home although we pass a park and again it is crowded with men. Like really crowded Indian men mostly so we are thinking it might be some sort of religious festival
Back up that steep hill to the hotel and a little nightcap before bed. Love the wine here. Tomorrow Sintra.
